Basic Surgical Techniques (Dentistry) - tematics

2023/2024 academic year 2nd semester

7th week (25, 27 March) 

  • Lecture 1: The role of operative professions in medicine. Surgical deontology. Surgical armamentarium.
  • Lecture 2: Surgical sutures, suture materials
  • Seminar: Classification and handling of the surgical instruments. Tools' order on the instrumental tables. (2 hours)

8th week (3 April) 

  • Seminar: Conventional hand suturing and knotting techniques. Suture materials in practice. (2 hours)

9th week (8, 10 April)  

  • Lecture 3: Types of bleeding. Different methods of surgical hemostasis. Vein preparation and cannulation. Injection techniques and blood sampling.
  • Seminar: Bioplasts and tissue adhesives.
  • Practice: Ligatures on gauze model. Vein preparation/cannulation, preparation of infusion set. Blood sampling and injection techniques (i.m., i.v.) on phantom models. Wound closure with different suture techniques on gauze models. (3 hours)

10th week (15, 17 April) – operating room

  • Lecture 4: Asepsis, antisepsis. Preparation for operation personnel: scrubbing, gowning, gloving. Isolation. Operating room environment. 
  • Practice: Scrubbing. Skin incision, ligatures and wound closure with different suture techniques on biopreparate models (3 hours)

11th week (22, 24 April) - operating room

  • Lecture 5: Surgical incisions. Conicotomy, tracheostomy.
  • Practice: Conicotomy on phantom model. Scrubbing. Skin incision, ligatures and wound closure with different suture techniques on biopreparate models (3 hours)
    Final test.
